Rosemary, I can not really remember a time when you were not in my world. I have called you my babysitter, my godmother, and my friend. All of these are true, and none of these come close to describing what you are to me. The place we created—where a skinny island in the East River was host to concrete ships, plane journeys, Hansel & Gretel’s forest, and rooftop stargazing—is the most magical place I have ever known. Everywhere the contours of my imagination wandered you filled out with color, and definition, and loving life lessons. My home became your home and vice versa, your cats became my own dear treasured pets, my family became your family and yours, mine. Everywhere you went, community sprouted up around you. You touched so many lives and made them better; I am just fortunate enough to have received a much larger share of that attention than I deserved.
I grew up and moved out of the city, then to college, then to the opposite side of the country. You always stayed my Rosemary, and I your Andrew. I woke up one morning this week and learned you were no longer on the other side of the country, because now you are everywhere, in my mind and in the communities around me. No body or geography can contain you when your spirit is rooted in love. Through that love we remain together, close as ever, until we see each other face to face again.
All my love,
Andrew

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Rosemary. She came into our lives when we needed a caregiver for our bright, sensitive son Andrew. I would have blessed to find a warm caregiver but instead this brilliant, sensitive young women became a co-parent. As his godmother she was attuned to his needs and extraordinary abilities. I have thanked God many times over the years for bringing her into his life and ours. When Rose decided to go to law school, she brought Bessie McKenna into our lives to make sure he would continue to have the devoted loving support he deserved. Her thoughtfulness and generosity of spirit have enriched our lives as well as Andrew’s. And her sensitivity and devotion live on in her Andrew as he parents his son Casper.
The children she advocated for in two decades as a child advocate will never know how her extraordinary selflessness touched their lives. But we know how many ways she touched our family’s lives and we are forever grateful.
It’s hard to imagine a world without Rose living in it. But she will remain present in us and to us in spirit and memory. Love you always, Rosemary.

Q: How did you meet Rosemary?
A: I worked with Rose for approximately 6 years at the Administration for Children Services. She was a wonderful colleague who always had a smile and kind words for everyone! She will be greatly missed.
