I was puzzled by Dave when I first met him. Although he would occasionally chuckle, he rarely smiled. I thought his stern expression meant he was displeased, which is not what you hope for in a boss. Eventually, I realized that the look on his face was that of a person listening very carefully to others. He thought deeply about nearly everything and he wanted to express his ideas with accuracy and empathy. After we knew each other better, he joked with me about his lack of a ready smile. When I heard the news of his passing, I sorted through many photos of Dave in different situations and I realized that he had to be highly motivated to smile -- or sitting near someone he loved. That raised his happiness to the surface. I will miss our conversations and his expansive thinking. He set an example of leadership equaled by few and admired by many.
