One Afternoon, a family walked onto my unit. They were looking for a place to care for a man they called husband and father. They were a loving, caring and strong duo, Kelly and Whitney. I asked them not to judge a book by its cover and trust that their family member would be loved and cared for in the best way. A few hours later, I met John. John from the beginning was my biggest challenge. Strong willed and determined with a sense of humor. The first day John was with us he wasn't too pleased with the food selection. So, I asked Whitney what he liked and she told me cheesteaks. That afternoon, in my office John and I had lunch, Dalessandro's cheesteaks with Provolone Cheese. From that point on, I had a new best buddy. What I saw in the short time that I spent with John was that he loved his family. The emotions that John showed were proof of that and I thank everyone who came to visit John and who worked with me in helping John transition from his old home to his new home. From Johns sisters ( Louisa and Lea) niece (Jill) nephew ( Richard) and Babies Quinn and Liza, it was clear that John was indeed a true family man. Jamie and Bill, John's friends both respectful of the unit and supporting John when he needed them the most. I know in my heart John was grateful to all of you, knowing that you loved and cared for him deeply. To Kelly and Whitney, your husband/dad was one of the luckiest men alive to have you both by his side. From daily visits, providing whatever he needed it when he needed it, to coloring and doing his laundry. You both came and helped shower John, made sure he brushed his teeth and that his hair was neat ( even that stubborn little piece that liked to stand up in the back). You are and were John's biggest advocates and supports. He knew that and I know that he loved you both with every ounce of his being. As a nurse, I learned so much from John. I learned patience, I learned to laugh and I learned that it was ok to cry. I will never forget this beautiful, amazing, strong family and I most certainly will never forget my friend John. He truly left an impression on my heart. Forever in my thoughts and prayers, Lauren
