Jay W. MacMoran M.D., peacefully passed away on February 16, 2017, at the age of ninety at The Beaumont Retirement Community in Bryn Mawr, PA where he resided for 12 years. He was a life-long Philadelphian, born on December 16, 1926 to Alfred and Emily, and raised in Roxborough, PA. After graduating from Roxborough High School at the age of 16, he entered St. Lawrence University through the Navy ROTC program. He later transferred as a sophomore to The University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1946. Jay completed medical school at Thomas Jefferson University in 1950, and began an Internship at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. He completed his Residency in Radiology at Germantown Hospital and Medical Center.
As a Board Certified Physician in Radiology, he continued his career at Germantown Hospital and Medical Center, becoming the Chairman of the Department from 1977-1987, when he "retired". Additionally, he was also a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. His "retirement" was brief as he quickly joined the Department of Radiology at Einstein Medical Center, and then ultimately at Temple University School of Medicine, where he was appointed Clinical Professor of Radiology until 2012. He was a long time member of the Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society, the oldest regional radiological society in North America, and was awarded the Outstanding Educator award in 1999.
In addition to his remarkable skills in radiologic diagnosis, Jay was extremely interested in the ancient problems of leprosy. On two occasions he served as Visiting Professor of Radiology at Christian Medical College in Vellore, South India. His radiological studies of leprosy in India, Nepal, and Pakistan also included publications of papers on the subject. Additionally, he had been a consultant to the United States Public Health Service Hospital in Carville, Louisiana.
At his core, Jay was a man of profound faith. Much of his medical work was combined with a mission emphasis, whether it be in India or Philadelphia. His devotion to mission work and missionaries around the world was tireless. He was a life-long member of Tenth Presbyterian Church, was married there in 1957, and spent many years as a church elder. Jay was also deeply involved with Interserve USA. Interserve is one of the oldest international, interdenominational, overseas-focused agencies in existence that focuses on care for the poor and marginalized. In 1974, Jay was appointed as Acting Director until the British and American Boards merged in 1976. Jay loved this work and exemplified this love in the care he offered to countless others.
Of all the many accomplishments and areas of devoted care in Jay's life, he was first and foremost a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-one years, Jane, and his son Jonathan Jay. He is survived by his daughters Suzanne (Chris) and Caroline (Joan), his four grandchildren Michael, Laura, Heather and Ian, and his great-granddaughter Ardrey. He is forever remembered for his kindness, generosity and overflowing love of his family. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at Tenth Presbyterian Church, 1701 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, on March 11, 2017 at 2 pm. Donations in memory of Jay W. MacMoran may be made to The City School, 860 N 24th St., Philadelphia, PA 19130.
