Sending sincere condolences to the Saunders family. I enjoyed several dinners with Mort at Stratton and always admired his active life style. I marveled at how he would drive in his older years all the way to Vt from PA.
My thoughts are with you all

I had the honor and pleasure of serving Mort as his golf pro at Woods Hole Golf Club. Mort was the epitome of the "gentleman golfer". Mort was so kind and generous, especially to the staff at Woods Hole.
The fondest memories are of Mort hosting his family for a game of golf at Woods Hole. The cherry on the sundae was having his grandson Teddy working in the bag room.
I will miss this wonderful man.
RIP Mort. God is well pleased.

All the Johnson family were very sad to hear of Mort's passing. He was such a wonderful gentleman and good friend. We were truly honored to attend several of his birthday parties in recent years. It will be very tough to drive down Elm Road and not see his car there, a good sign that the summer was in full swing.
As a multi time winner of many sailing events, he always had time to say hello at QYC. His competitive nature even included careful attention to detail before a race. I often complimented him on always having a "clean bottom" before races. It became a standing joke between us.
Mort, our wonderful friend...may all your storms be weathered, may all that's good get better, here's to life, here's to love, here's to you.

It's amazing how many people's lives were touched by Mort. He was instrumental in getting my children into sailing. And then one Christmas he sent each child ski equipment and an invitation to Stratton. Now, the 3 of them are very accomplished sailors and skiers.
We will always have wonderful memories of the man.

Dear Sydney, Vahe, Penelope, Nick, Randy, Weatherly, Teddy and the entire Saunders family,
You are all in my thoughts and prayers as I know what a central and indomitable force Mort was to your family, all of the communities he was a part of and in life.
I have been privileged to know Mort through Sydney, and be welcomed and embraced in his wit, love and generosity of spirit. I can only imagine the void which has been left through his passing.
Mort’s determination, steadfast belief in what and who he felt was right and his undeterred passion for life and those he loved is an inspiration and reminder to follow our dreams.
Over the years and despite the transatlantic distance, Mort became a part of my family as well. Coming to my wedding, sharing life updates over text messages and our annual mutual Christmas cards.
When the dust settles, I hope that the knowledge of the lives he has touched, the dreams he has inspired and fostered and the living memories in your hearts brings you solace.
Today Ori and Dahlia lit candles for Mort. We will dance with sparklers as the sun sets and celebrate a life that was truly lived. Our hearts are especially full for your family and all those who have been touched by his life. Sending you love today and on all the days to come.

Imagine my surprise in 1963 when, in my summer job as Steward of the MBL Club in Woods Hole, I met up with my Williams College fraternity brother Mort Saunders. Over a drink at his parent's house overlookng Great Harbor, we caught up and shared college memories. Our paths continued to cross when Susanne and I built a house in Quissett and joined the Yacht Club where Mort was a sailing super star and he and Deirdre were great contributors to the community across many dimensions. In addition to our love of sailing, we also shared membership in the Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole where his advice and support were highly valued. In so many communities, he will be sorely missed.

Our family loved Mort and Deidre : they are a part of our family for many years with times spent skiing and sailing. Their love for my parents during difficult times (Mike and Peggy Desantis) was so amazing and I’m forever grateful to Mort for his kindness and support❤️

Mort was a good friend. I’ve known him since I first met his mother, Dorothy Saunders, and boarded horses at Idlewild the summer of 1978. Mort used to bring his daughter, Sydney Fox, there, and our common interest in Saunders Woods, Idlewild Farm, and Bridlewild Trails kept us connected all these years. When I used to write the Bridlewild Newsletter, I’d take it to his company, Dixon-Saunders, which published it. Good memories.
Mort was a considerate, soft-spoken, caring gentleman with a wonderful, quiet sense of humor.
I will miss him, but I am grateful to have known him and considered him a friend.

For many years, we enjoyed the good fortune of living next door to Mort and Deirdre at our summer homes in the Moors. We have so many fond memories of good times shared-- from backyard barbecues to over the hedge gossip to dinners at the Woods Hole Yacht Club. Mort was always great company and a true gentleman. He really took pleasure in relating the results of his sailing competitions, and displeasure at the outcomes whenever a Democratic Administration came into power. We still miss Deirdre, who left us way too soon, and will always miss Mort as well. Our sincere condolences to Sydney, Randy and the rest of his family.

I saw Mort both at Stratton (where he lived two doors down from my parents) and also at Quissett where my in-laws were and where my mother-in-law sailed. What a nice man. RIP Mort.

We were lucky enough to be Mort’s neighbors on Cape Cod for the last 17 years. Across those years he was a wonderful neighbor, full of stories and an inspiration to all. We are so sad for your loss but are sure you hold many many wonderful memories which is quite a legacy in and of itself.

Dear Saunders Family,
The entire Quissett community grieves with you. It is difficult to imagine a race or a summer event without Mort, who (like Dierdre) was at the heart of sailing and socializing. He contributed so much and we are grateful that he came to Quissett and made it his second home. Sending condolences as we remember Mort.

Mort Saunders was the model of generosity and decency. In the early 1970s he did the unthinkable and involve me in his competitive sailing activities which was the basis of relationships that still maintain. I didn’t bring anything to the party, I was brand new to sailing and he was taking a huge risk Getting me involved. Of course, what I learned was incredible. It was a privilege sailing with Mort and the crews that he would assemble, people with decades of sailing experience and competitive racing. it was hard work, but a lot of fun
It was an amazingly lucky thing to get to know Mort and his wife Deirdre. His amazing sense of humor, generosity, set goldstandard. About two weeks ago, I was fortunate to think to myself that I hadn’t spoke with Morton sometime probably several years. The last time was undoubtedly at the 100th anniversary of the Corinthian yacht club of Philadelphia. App nothing I called Mort on a weekday afternoon and we had a delightful chat. We reloaded a number of sailing memories and he expressed his appreciation and Fortune at having lead a wonderful life. I am glad I made the call work will be greatly missed.
