Obituary of Ann R. Morton

Please share a memory of Ann to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ann Rosemary Morton, age 89, passed away peacefully in her home on August 28, 2024.

Ann was born in Cardiff, Wales on May 17, 1935.  She lived in her family home with her beloved family, horses and assorted dogs until the age of 8 years.  As the War developed, she and her brother were sent to inland boarding schools for their safety. Ann continued to be a boarding student through her college years and never returned to live again in the family home.

Ann was a heralded athlete and was a member of the Welsh National Women’s Lacrosse team. In 1960, she was elected to play on the Great Britian and Ireland Touring Lacrosse team. It was in this capacity she first came to Philadelphia where the Team was given a ticker-tape parade down Broad Street and the entire team was personally greeted by Mayor Richard Dilworth.   During that time, Ann met numerous people, including the then head of Women’s Physical Education at the Springside School.  She returned to the UK after the tour, but three years later was asked to come and join the faculty at the Springside School to fill in while another went on sabbatical.  Ann applied for a Green Card, eventually became a US citizen and remained here the rest of her life.

Ann loved the area and often said she felt “I was meant to be here”.  Ann joined the Philadelphia Cricket Club (PCC) in 1966 and took up golf soon after.  She became an avid 5-6 handicap golfer and was singularly focused on building the Women’s Golf Team at PCC.  Today, as the result of her dedication, PCC Women are one of the top club golf teams in the country.

Ann is survived by two nieces and a nephew in the UK, and her many friends from All Hallows Episcopal Church and PCC.  She was predeceased by her Mother and Father; her life partner, Jean Laberge in 2012, and her brother, Ian in 2023.
