Obituary of Mary E Souder

Mary Elizabeth “Betty “ (Behan) Souder died on November 14, 2023 (age 97) at Brightview Assisted Living in East Norriton, PA, where she received attentive and loving care.

Betty is fondly remembered as part of the Greatest Generation. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Harlen “Bipp” Souder. Betty and Bipp were married on August 11, 1945 while Bipp was a recovering disabled blind World War II veteran (Amphibious Landing Forces-South Pacific Theater).

She is survived by her 5 children:

Michael (Barbara) Souder of Sea Isle City, NJ

Greg (Ann) Souder of Malvern, PA

Susan (Bruce) Bonkoski of Glenside, PA

Bruce “Bipper” (Sharon) Souder of Williamsrown, NJ

Bettianne Hurwitz of Royersford PA

She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Betty graduated from Little Flower High School in Philadelphia, PA. Betty was always proud to say that she completed her senior year in 3 months during the summer of 1943, so she could enter the work force during World War II. She officially graduated from Little Flower in 1944.

Betty was both a fantastic artist and avid bowler well into her 90’s. She particularly loved spending her time at the Jersey shore in their Strathmere home with all of her family and friends.

Betty will be missed. We affectionately called Mom, “ Queen Mary “, because of her strength and uncomplaining resolve to carry on. She was an inspiration to all of us. Betty was truly part of the “Greatest Generation”.
