I was searching the internet to see if I could find whatever happened to Mr. McGovern since he was the best teacher I ever had. So sad to see he passed away. It was his love of books, reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at our basement classroom at St. Simeon’s church in Philadelphia. He encouragement to me to write stories which I do to this day. His love of teaching and life is what I’ll always remember. So sad to see that this world lost a impactful educator and human being.

Hello im the nephew of Francis Mclontosh Michael Pessolano I new all of your family when were kids last one I saw was Beatrice a few yrs before she passed at a wedding Anyway Francis I'm sure has passed but before she did we were talking about me getting info on my 2 cousins or there mothers so I could get contact with them to visit them like at Christmas but then Fran passed and I have no way of contacting them.they would be the the mother's Theresa Jenifer plus there children Barbara and Ashley im.older but had a son very late in life so wanted to talk to them about a will for them so please contact me if you get this message my number is 856 883 5669 cal any time

Mr. McGovern was the most wonderful and inspirational teacher I've ever had! I came across this page as I was trying to locate him to send him a thank you note, all these years later. I am so sorry to hear that he is gone. My condolences to his family.
I attended the McClure Elementary Alternative program for 5th&6th grades (1976-78). Mr. McGovern taught us math, read books like "The Outsiders" to us, and created plays for us to perform in like "King Midas", and "The Yellow Submarine". He always had something nice to say to students and he was always encouraging. He encouraged me to apply to Masterman Jr. High, where I was accepted. This set me on a trajectory to earn an excellent education in the Philadelphia Public school system. I later attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls' and then went on to earn a B.S. from Drexel University.
Thank you Dr. John (Jack) McGovern. I think of you often. I will continue to remember all of your encouragement and enthusiasm for education. Rest in Peace. ~ Diana Duke (Black)

He was indeed a true friend, a good writer and so much more!
I was his student at Cabrini College, his colleague at The Penn Literacy Network and one of his biggest fans!
I, like countless others, savored every poem he recited, every story he told and every word of wisdom he uttered.
My deep condolences go out to his family and friends at this difficult time of loss.
May his memory always be a blessing.

We lost a dear friend last week, with the passing of Dr. Jack McGovern. Educator, athlete (Catholic League two mile champion in 1965), teammate, friend... one of the most articulate and intelligent individuals to pass through my life, and one of the kindest. When you spoke with Jack, you had his undivided, focused attention on you and you alone. Knowledgeable across so many topics, lover of WB Yeats, James Joyce and all things Irish. I had the privilege of knowing Jack McGovern through workshops and graduate studies. He was genuine in his love for language and education. He was an outstanding teacher. His knowledge, experience, ability to communicate were inspirational. His enthusiasm was contagious, and his joy was unforgettable. He had direct influence on me and I incorporated things he shared during my thirty six years teaching English and Philosophy at Bensalem High School. Jack McGovern was a truly inspirational teacher and friend. I will never forget his words of wisdom and his kindness to all. He helped so many children gain access to books and learn to love reading because of his passion and commitment to literacy. Jack's words will live on in the hearts and minds of so many. I loved that leprechaun. Once, at a CLI meeting , he turned to me and said, " Don't read Lovely Bones! Terrible book!" Alas too late, but I agreed. Such a special man. We shared a love of running and literature. The world is a smaller place wo him. RIP, dear Jack. - claudia balderston

I have such fond memories of working with Jack when he was principal of Abington Friends Lower School when I was teaching third grade. He loved books as much as I did, and gave me a collection of Yeats poetry at the end of the year because he knew I loved poetry. Jack never stopped learning. He rode the train to NY. with me, and two other teachers, Abby and Anne to attend a class at Columbia one summer. He was a teacher himself at Arcadia, and shared his love of reading and writing with Masters' students. I know that he inspired thousands of students and teachers during his life. Mr. McGovern was my 4th, 5th and 6th grade teacher at McClure Elementary (1974 to 1977). Our classroom was at St. Simeon's Lutheran Church. I have thought of him many times over the years as he made quite an impact on my life. I would like to share a favorite memory - and it has nothing to do with education. Mr. McGovern rode his Moped to school every day. He came in one morning and said that a big motorcycle pulled up next to him at a stop light. The man leaned over and said - ya wanna race? I have thought of that many times.
My deepest sympathies to the family. I remember meeting Mrs. McGovern and remember Sean (We were supposed to do a weekend camping trip that my father was arranging, but Sean got an ear infection and it was canceled).
