Obituary of Louis F. McCabe Jr.
Louis F McCabe Jr., 95, of Artman Home, Ambler, formerly of Flourtown, passed away January 14, 2021, from Covid-19. He was the dear husband of the late Elizabeth Hyde McCabe. He was the loving father of Colleen Serencsits (Bill), Louis (Gail), Michael (Janice), Elizabeth Wills (Frank), John (Nola), Meghan Volpi (Dino); grandfather of 12; and great grandfather of 3.
Blessed with the gift of storytelling including a bit of blarney, Lou was always smiling and would chat with anyone. He was a true gentleman who would help those in need, whether they be family, friend, or complete stranger. Lou was born in Philadelphia on January 29, 1925, to Louis F. McCabe Sr., Esq. and Gladys Raymond McCabe. As a young man, he was a gifted marksman and was named US National Junior Rifle Champion, and until recently, continued his interest in marksmanship with local target shooting competitions. He loved the ocean and thoroughly enjoyed his time as a lifeguard on the Atlantic City Beach Patrol. Lou enlisted while still in high school, serving in WW II in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater, stationed in Mindora, Philippines. After returning from service he received his GED through Temple University and then attended Ursinus College. A carpenter by trade, he was most happy with a tool in his hand. Lou built the family home and filled it with handmade furniture, antiques, and interesting items that he and his wife found at auctions and estate sales. Lou continued his love of woodworking into his retirement, creating scroll saw designs and furniture for family and friends. Many of his designs were donated to the St. Genevieve’s Annual Christmas Bazaar. As a past member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club and avid sportsman, he enjoyed teaching his children the sportsmanship required to play and excel in many sports. An animal lover, he treasured his horses, many dogs, a monkey, a few ducks, and any creature brought home by his children. Lou was a wonderful husband, dad, and pop pop and will be missed by all who knew him. Services and a celebration of life will be held at a later date when it is safe to gather. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery County SPCA, 19 E. Ridge Pike, P.O. Box 222, Conshohocken, PA 19428.
