Al was my supervisor for 20 years in the publications dept. He was always supportive, encouraging and kind, helping me through many learning bumps. He was also a friend who shared his love of family and also of the arts. Al was my jazz buddy loving the music as I do. One of his goals was to collect every version of Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight". I hope he succeeded. He liked gardening and I told him I wanted to build a trellis for my vegetable garden. Wow, the next day he brings me a bundle of 6 foot bamboo stalks from the pesky patch behind his yard. What a friend! Al was a very kind, generous and gentle man. I will always think of him fondly.

I first met Al HE Brown while serving at the 205th Military Intelligence detachment in Frankfurt, Germany 1970-72. We were a small group supporting Army V Corps - Remember this was during the cold war and Vietnam was still going on... winding down, but this eclectic group included an Astronomer from Sana Cruz, California (That's Alan T Koski on the far left with his wife Linda), Al "Heavy Duty" as was his nickname at that time,"Schleif" (aka Richard Schleifer on the right...another Philly native). I was the youngest amongst our group of four and obviously behind the camera in this photo. The photo BTW, was probably taken on a Rhine River cruise, a getaway for the entire unit and our jobs of analyzing Soviet and East German military installations on the other side of the border (Obvious and I'm sure declassified by now...:-)
Our military experience was more like a college dorm, hindered by the occasional military drill (which as I recall Al hated more than anything), but it was after our daily work, when this German literature major from Haverford College, would hang in my room from time to time. And we would share a bottle of German white wine, some brotchen and some fabulous cheese - we would savor this as our dinner while reading the "heavy stuff"...some new releases from Marvel Comics....the Amazing Spiderman or Fantastic Four. We were all young, but I will always look back upon this camaraderie with the deepest of respect for the comfort it provided to us all while being away from home.
It was Al who encouraged me to take two semesters of German while we were in Germany - how clever and advantages it was to do so while we were there! How did he know that I would end of making dozens of trips back to Germany over years and end up selling so many beautiful German Christmas goods in our retail business? He didn't....but he did know about passion and how to take advantage of your situation no matter where you were.
Since our time when these pictures were taken, I have visited Al a couple of times when in Philadelphia....not often enough however. I know this because I miss him deeply. Life is short and Al was a gentle and intelligent being whom I miss already. May his family recall his spirit and enjoy in the memories that we all have of this wonderful person. Rest in Peace Al. Your lifelong friend, John

Al wasn’t just a member of the Philadelphia Center for the Book. He was an essential member. He was in charge of PCB’s Facebook page; he was invariably present at our members’ and friends’ events at various libraries’ Special Collections around the city; he took our workshops; and he was a core member, for five years, of PCB’s Artists’ Working Group. In that context he developed (and debated) all the works that he exhibited in the yearly Members Exhibition. His wide academic intelligence informed his pieces as well as his comments on the work of others. But even more memorable was his delight in how folding paper can create visually fascinating and conceptually suggestive structures. He is already missed. — Susan Viguers

I had the good fortune to work with Al for 30 years and always found Al more than willing and able to offer help to anyone who needed it. Al’s heart was pure and his sense of humour was so dry that you had to laugh when he dropped the punchline. Al was a good friend and someone who would always lend you an ear when you needed it. We all called him “Doc” after Doc Brown from the “Back To The Future” trilogy as both men were brilliant and a little off their “center.” It was said with great humour and Al certainly appreciated that we recognized his wit & wisdom. The world is a little less funny with the passing of Al “Doc” Brown.

Dear Ellen:
I'm so grieved to learn of the death of your dear husband. Please accept my deepest sympathy, and extend it to Kate and Daniel. I thank God for your nearly half a century of happiness with him and for all he was and gave to the world. May his memory be a blessing to you. I commit you and all his family to God, who "is close to the brokenhearted; those who are crushed in spirit God will save." Please let me know if I may be of service to you in any way.
Sincerely yours,
Maureen O'Riordan
