Obituary of Allen N. Mowery

Please share a memory of Allen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Allen Nathaniel Mowery was born on August 20th, 1918 to William Franklin and Sarah Jane Mowery. He was born in the town of Ellen Gowan, a small town between Shenandoah and Mahanoy City. Things were very hard for them as his father died 6 weeks after he was born and his mother had to raise all 4 children as a single Mom.

He went as far as 11th grade and then had to leave school in order to support his mother as she could no longer work. Dad then worked in the local gas station for 2 years.

Allen married Lois Elvira Biermann on February 7th, 1942 by Pastor Luther F. Schlenker in St John’s Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, Pa.

July 30, 1943, a son, Richard Allen Mowery was born in Shenandoah; followed by a daughter, Carol Lois Mowery on November 26th, 1946.

Dad and Mom were married 60 years prior to her passing March 2002.

He was in the Army from April 1942 to January 1946.

He left California on the USS General Hershey for Leyte in the Phillipines. It took them one month due to the ship breaking down.   Then he went on to   Mindanao which is the second largest Island in the Phillipines.  Prior to his arriving in Mindanao, 2 bombs had already been dropped.  From there, they went to Hiroshima.

Their unit was sent there as a Peace Keeping mission. They were the first ones there after the bomb was dropped.  He spent 6 months in Japan.

On Dec 28th, at Nagai, he boarded the USS Admiral H T Mayo which left port the following day for Seattle Washington. (Pearl Harbor Jan 5th left

Jan 6th)    He arrived back in San Francisco on January 10, 1946 passing the Golden Gate Bridge at 11:15. They docked in the U.S.A. at 12:15. On January 20, 1946, he received an Honorable Discharge from the Army.

After leaving the military, he worked for Precision Tube in Lansdale from June 1946 to July 1950, working in metal tubing where he also supervised and trained at various times of his employment.

In July, 1950, he started working at Nice Ball Bearing Company as a Heat Treater and Foreman. He also worked in the Lathe Department and many other assignments before retiring in February 1980.

July 1985 he returned to the work force at Hechinger’s where he was the manager of the Tool Department. During that time, he also participated in Public Relations activities by visiting schools and teaching basic introductory to tools. He retired for the second time on August 24th, 1991.

Again on September 4, 1994, Dad returned to work for Sears in their tool department. He could tell you where anything was in the store. He could also tell you anything you wanted to know about every nut, screw and bolt.   He retired for the last time on August 17, 2001.

He loved to bowl and of course his church is a big part of his life.

A few years ago, he told us that he had two goals left and they were:

To reach 50 years in the Masons and to reach the age of 100.

His 50th anniversary with the Masons was in October 2015.

His 100th birthday is on the 20th.

Allen is survived by his children, Richard A. Mowery, Carol L. May  married to  William A. May, Jr; and his grandchildren, Richard, married to Liia. Daughter Aili; William III, married to Stephanie, daughter Miranda, son Jacob; Robert, married to Kristin, sons Lyle and Kevin

So Dad, you have had a full life and have met all your goals.   But you still have time left; looks like you need to set some more goals.

The first goal being getting ready to meet your 5th great grandchild in 5 weeks.
