Obituary of Barbara L. Gowen
Born on November 8, 1942 to George and Dorothy Brown Gowen in Philadelphia, Bonnie was known for her kindness, generosity, intelligence and devotion to family.
After graduating from Merion Mercy Academy in 1960, she attended Chestnut Hill College before joining the Sisters of Mercy. During her time in the order, Bonnie earned her degree from Gwynedd Mercy University and served as a teacher at St. Mark’s.
Upon leaving the order, Bonnie earned a degree in religious studies from Fordham University and an MBA from Temple. Known for her excellent memory, Bonnie was also a member of MENSA.
Bonnie worked at Unisys for over 30 years, but her real passion was spending time with and helping people. She was a Weight Watchers leader for many years, served as Eucharistic minister and CCD teacher, and sang in the Sisters of Mercy Choir.
Bonnie enjoyed gardening, reading, music, spending time with friends, and the occasional glass of wine. She also had a great devotion to her many pets over the years. But her greatest joy was spending time with her grandsons.
Bonnie is survived by her daughters Catherine “Kate” Gowen and Claire Gowen, grandsons Andrew Gowen and Christopher Long, siblings George (Paula) Gowen, Ellen (Robert) McNeill and Thomas Gowen and many devoted nieces and nephews. Her brother, Kevin, predeceased her.
