Obituary of Betty May Herriott

Please share a memory of Betty to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Betty M. Herriott passed away peacefully on May 18, 2019 at the Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill.  She was 99 years old.

Betty was born February 27, 1920 in Pittsburgh to Raymond and Anna Utzler.  After graduating from Langley High School in Pittsburgh in1939, she worked for the Joseph Horne department store.  She married Addison Herriott in August 1941.   Soon after, Addison joined the Army Air Force and became a radio operator; they were stationed near airfields in Maine and New Hampshire during the war.   They later settled in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bethel Park until their retirement, at which time sunny Bradenton, FL replaced Pittsburgh winters.  When her husband entered the Masonic Village nursing home in 1991, Betty moved to Swarthmore to be near him and her daughter, Barbara, and family.  She enjoyed spending time with her friends at the 107 Rutgers Ave condominium and the Swarthmore United Methodist Church, but her greatest joy was taking care of her beloved grandsons.

Betty was known for her love of cooking (especially desserts), her pride in her grandsons and her generous spirit.   She loved children and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her grandsons.   She was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan and rarely missed watching a game.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Barbara Weir (Brian) of Swarthmore; grandsons Matthew Weir (Lauren) of Swarthmore and great grandson George; Thomas Weir (Petra) of Bethesda, MD, and great grandchildren Hayden and Rhodes; as well as several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her husband Addison, siblings Ruth and Robert, and so many friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Swarthmore United Methodist Church on June 22 at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Masonic Villages (https://masonicvillages.org/donate-now/)  or the Swarthmore United Methodist Church.
