Richard Dunlap Lownes Sr.," Dick" age 86 of The Peter Becker Community, Harleysville formerly of Lafayette Hill and Roxborough died Monday, October 24, 2016 at Peter Becker . Dick was born December 13,1929 in Phila., PA. He is the son of the late Milton M. and the late Gladys (Dunlap) Lownes. He is the beloved husband of Nancy (Morrison) Lownes. Dick was a well known and respected Funeral Director in the Phila. And Montgomery County area and would help anyone at anytime. He was born and raised in Roxborough and was a proud graduate of Roxborough High, where he received the Outstanding Athlete Award in 1946 and 1947 for Track and Football. Dick went on to attend Muhlenberg College and Northwestern Univ. School of Funeral Management. Dick also graduated Dolans College of Mortuary Science in 1950.He served our Country during the Korean War in Germany in the Graves Registration Division. Dick moved his family owned funeral home, established in 1888, from the Fairmount section of Phila. to its current location in Lafayette Hill in the early 1950's which is run by his son Randy and his fifth generation grandson, Wesley. Dick was a very active member at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Lafayette Hill, serving as a past Council President and past Lutheran Brotherhood President and chairman of many of their turkey suppers throughout the years.He was a Life member of the Whitemarsh Ambulance Assn. and the Barren Hill Volunteer Fire Co. He was a former member of the Whitemarsh Jaycees , Roxborough Kiwanis Club, Board member of the Northwestern Institute of Psychiatry , The Visiting Nurse Assn., Wissahickon Hospice, The Montgomery County Big Brother Assn. Board member of the Masonic Village of Lafayette Hill for over 30 years .He was a member of the Board of Supervisors for 11 years, The Whitemarsh Lions Club,former Board member of the Roxborough YMCA,Masonic Fritz Lodge #308,Lu Lu Temple Shrine,Tall Cedars and several other Masonic affiliations. In the early 1990's he received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Plymouth Whitemarsh Exchange Club. His professional organizations that he was a member of was the Montgomery County Funeral Directors Assn. ,past President of the Penna. Funeral Directors Assn.1970-71 and former member of the National FDA. Dick was also well known for his cooking skills, sense of humor and the ability to play golf while his body was ready to shut down. He hosted the Ocean City Open for many years at his home in Ocean City, NJ for his friends and always looked forward to going out to dinner with Nancy. He is survived by his wife: Nancy (Morrison) Lownes - Father of Ruthann M. Lownes , Richard D. Lownes Jr.(Cate), Robert S. Lownes (Michelle) and Randall K. Lownes (Margie) Also survived by his 7 grandchildren. The funeral will be held 11:00 am on Saturday, October 29 at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church, 3025 Church Rd., Lafayette Hill, PA. 19444. Burial will be private at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd Calling hours will be Friday, October 28 from 5-8pm at Lownes Family Funeral Home, 659 Germantown Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA. and Saturday, October 29 from 9:30-10:45am at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church, 3025 Church Rd., Lafayette Hill, PA. A Masonic Service will be at 10:45am Sat. at the church also. .
