Obituary of Carmela P. Koussis

Carmela (Mela) Possemato Koussis, 82, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2016, surrounded by her family after a prolonged battle with metastatic breast cancer. She is survived by 3 children and their families – Lisa Lemire (Raymond and children Dillon and Jeremy), Gregory Koussis (Karen and children Damien and Nicholas) and Melissa Mogul (Stacy). Mom was born May 15, 1933 in Brooklyn New York, the daughter of Susan (Marino) and Saverio Possemato. Mom was a graduate of Hunter College High School, Columbia University and Hahnemann Medical College where she was the only female in her class. She was a psychiatrist by profession and loved what she did; she was one of the lucky ones whose career truly matched who she was. To be near her was to understand how much she wished the best for you, and was willing to help in any way she could – no matter what you shared with her, you felt like you had a partner who would help you figure things out. A perfect day for Mom would include plenty of time curled up with her cat, in front of a beautiful expanse of water, with any form of reading material; then some time watching the latest political news on TV; later a meeting at one of her bonsai (or fiber arts or Ethical Society of Philadelphia) groups; and last dinner with her children and their families. Above all else Mom valued her family, and taught her children to do the same. We will miss Mom's energy, intellectual curiosity, her kind and unselfish spirit, her joy in learning just for the sake of learning and her love for us all.
