Camilla F Williams Obituary

Camilla Fairman Williams, known as Cimmie, a beloved wife, devoted mother, distinguished designer and friend to many,  passed away peacefully on October 23rd.

Born on June 8, 1923, in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, Cimmie was the daughter of Wirt and Kate Thompson. She received her K-12 education at Shady Hill, Springside, and Agnes Irwin Schools. During World War II, she proudly contributed to the war effort by driving officers in the South Broad Street Armory motor pool, demonstrating a lifelong characteristic of a spirited sense of duty, capability and resolve.

With her husband, Matthews Williams, they together built a rich and enduring life on the Main Line of Philadelphia and in Beaufort, South Carolina. Together, they raised four children: Matt, Scott, Steve, and Kim. Cimmie and Matt’s legacy lives on through their 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Cimmie translated her innate aesthetic talents into a successful career in decorating and design, first under the mentorship of Lee Large, and later through her own firm, Inside Out, where her vision and taste flourished, leaving a mark on countless homes and including her work on the Women’s Board of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. An avid gardener, she was an active member of The Weeders and The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

In 1985, Cimmie and Matt relocated to Beaufort, South Carolina, where they established a vibrant life together in the Lowcountry.  Following Matt’s death in 2005, Cimmie returned to her roots in the Philadelphia area, and was among the very first residents at The Hill at Whitemarsh, where she continued to share her warmth, wisdom, and active spirit for over 20 years.

Cimmie’s life was defined by the dual forces of creativity and dedication — to her community, her craft and her family. Rarely has such an unfiltered view of life been so warmly received, by virtually everyone who encountered her aura.  She will be deeply missed by everyone who was touched by her grace, her humor, and her vitality.

Her life will be celebrated in a big way in the Spring. Contributions in her memory to The Philadelphia Orchestra would be welcome.
