Obituary of Esther R. Mattis
Esther passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, friendship, and cherished memories.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy B. Mattis, Jr., and her son, Roy (Rick) B. Mattis III. She is survived by her son, Bruce David Mattis; granddaughter, Christina Mattis Shafer; and great-grandchildren, Corie Mattis Shafer and Joshua Roy Shafer.
Esther’s life was rich with love for her family and friends. Her warm heart and enduring friendships were a hallmark of her character—once a friend, always a friend. Many of those close to her shared a lifetime of laughter and memories, from childhood adventures with her brothers, Bud (Frank) and Harry, to later years filled with family cookouts and holiday celebrations.
She fondly remembered her early days spent with her beloved aunts and took great joy in visits from extended family, especially as new generations came along. In her later years, the visits from her granddaughter Christina and great-grandchildren Corie and Joshua brought her immense joy and lit up her days.
Esther had a zest for life, enjoying trips, shows, and concerts. During her years in Roxborough, she found peace in the beauty of Valley Green and Wissahickon Park—so much so that a picture of Valley Green remained with her even after she moved to Lancaster. She shared her love of nature and the ocean with her sons Rick and Bruce, instilling a family tradition of visiting Ocean City, NJ, a legacy now carried on by her granddaughter and great-grandchildren.
Together with her husband Roy, Esther was deeply involved in her church communities, both at Roxborough Presbyterian and later Westminster Presbyterian in Lancaster. Their faith brought them joy and a strong sense of community.
Kindness and thoughtfulness defined Esther. She never missed a life event without sending a heartfelt card or note. Her impeccable timing and warm messages brought comfort and connection to those she loved. Acts of kindness never went unnoticed, and a thank-you card was always sure to follow. Her handwritten letters were a treasured way she kept in touch with lifelong friends.
Esther lived a full and meaningful life. Her warmth, grace, and thoughtfulness will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind a beautiful roadmap of love, connection, and generosity for the rest of us to follow.
