Obituary of Charlotte A Uivary
Charlotte passed away peacefully, with loving family by her side, at 90 years of age on February 9th, 2025 at NewSeasons at New Britain personal care in Chalfont, PA. Born in 1934 to Everett H. Alexander and Aurore E. (“Betty”) Alexander (nee Giroux) in Philadelphia, PA, she grew up primarily in Schenectady, NY, where she was raised as an only child with close ties to aunts, uncles and cousins. Growing up as an only child made her treasure every family connection she had.
Her father’s family lived primarily in New Hampshire, where she loved to spend time with her grandmother, aunt, uncles, and cousins. When it came time for her to leave for college, she chose Middlebury College in Vermont, where she obtained a degree in English Literature, and studied Italian. One of the highlights of her college experience was an extended trip to Italy, which brought her much joy and opened new horizons.
She moved back to the Philadelphia area with her parents and worked at Pennsylvania Hospital as an executive assistant, making some life-long friendships during her time there. On November 30, 1963, she married the love of her life, Andy Uivary. They had 2 daughters, Amy and Kate, in 1965 and 1966, respectively. She loved being a mom, teaching her daughters reading and writing from a young age, and sharing her love of music. For about 10 years, she taught English as a second language to both Italian and Asian immigrant students in the Colonial School District, enjoying the challenge and the rewards of helping others to excel in school. Charlotte, Andy, Amy, and Kate took many family trips, which often included cousins and friends – favorite destinations were Ocean City, NJ; Williamsburg, VA; New Hampshire and Vermont. Later in life, Charlotte and Andy traveled as a couple, both in the U.S. and internationally with friends.
After raising Amy and Kate, Charlotte and Andy helped Kate to raise her son Scott, who she dearly loved. Charlotte felt blessed to give her Scotty the opportunity to grow up in the beautiful family home she and Andy treasured in Plymouth Meeting, PA, and loved that her only grandchild came up with her first and only nickname, Veen.
Charlotte loved her family with all her heart and was always generous with hugs and smiles. She loved music and the arts and had a long-time Philadelphia Orchestra subscription with her daughter Amy. She was also a long-time, involved member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, where she made many friends over the years. While living at NewSeasons during the last 2 years of her life, she attended Catholic services there as well. At NewSeasons, she continued to want to make people happy, giving a hug or cheerful words when someone was feeling down, and sharing any philosophical “mom wisdom” she could to make problems seem lighter. She was always looking for ways to help.
Charlotte is survived by her daughter Amy Lloyd (Roger); her grandson Scott Lukens (Alicia); cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends she has made over the years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Andy, and daughter Mary Kate Lukens.
A viewing followed by a funeral Mass will be held at Epiphany of Our Lord Church in Plymouth Meeting, PA on February 17, 2025 at 10 AM. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lownes Funeral Home in Lafayette Hill, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Epiphany of Our Lord R.C. Church or Hospice Angels Foundation. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at NewSeasons at New Britain and to Hospice Compassus for their excellent care and loving support.
